DEMOCRACY

We have never had a true democracy in the United States. People of color, women and Native Americans have only relatively recently been able to vote. Meanwhile, gerrymandering, voter suppression and intimidation, and the electoral college are tools that have been used to alter the popular vote.

OCEANS

After freeing a seagull from a plastic fishing line in 2010, I created the Beach Cleanup Station concept and founded  All One Ocean to educate people about the hazards of ocean plastics, setting up 50 Stations in the United States and Mexico. Before that I was cofounder and board member of  Seaflow (2000-2008), working locally, nationally, and internationally to educate people about the dangers of underwater sonar to marine life. To help protect one of my favorite coral reefs from overuse and abuse, I created an educational guide:  https://twostepbeach.net
